Kunming – Vang Vieng Train, Schedule, Price & Duration

As the China – Laos Railway, which links Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province in China and Vientiane, the capitial of Laos had been open for service on December 3 of 2021, train travel between China and Laos has become possible. There will be international trains linking Kunming and Vientiane in a day from morning to the afternoon in the future. The trains will pass through some major train stations including Kunming South, Xishuangbanna, Mohan in China, as well as Boten, Meang Xai, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vietaine in Laos.

From Kunming to Vang Vieng : the international trains from Kunming to Vang Vieng in Laos will be departing from Kunming Railway Station (Kunming), or Kunming South Railway Station (Kunmingnan), calling at Yuxi, Xishuangbanna, Mohan in Southwest of Yunnan Province, entering Laos from Boten Port and passing through Mueang Xay, Luang Prabang, Mueang Kasi before reaching Vang Vieng Railway Station . Then the train runs further southward to Vientine finally.

From Kunming, passengers can take metro Line 1 to get to Kunming Railway Station, or Line 1 Line 4 to get to Kunming South Railway Station.

Due to the covid-19, China – Laos border has not been reopen yet, and the internatinal train services have not been launched yet.

Vang Vieng Railway Station in Laos

Vang Vieng Railway Station (Chinese name: 万荣站) is a railway station on the China – Laos Railway and served by the Boten – Vientiane Railway, and it has been put into service on December 3 of 2021. As of February, it only serves domestic trains to or from Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Muong Xai and Boten in Laos.International trains to or from China’s Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Mohan, will be added when the China and Laos border reopen.

How to Buy Train Tickets

1. Buy online with official China Railway 12306

12306 China Railway is China’s only official online train ticketing platform, where you can check the real-time train schedule, booking rail tickets and managing your rail journey within every part of mainland China and Hong Kong. It has launched English version website since November of 2020, allowing foreign travelers to book tickets directly with their passports and credit cards.

2. Buy tickets with online ticket agents

You can also buy train tickets in person at any train station in China with your passports and cash. Don’t expect the train station staffs to speak any English. In Kunming, you can buy the domestic train tickets or international train tickets in Kunming Railway Station or Kunming South Railway Station.

The Kunming – Vientiane Railway is consist of three parts of railways:

  • 1. Kunming – Yuxi railway (Kunming – Yuxi train, 0.5-1 hrs)
  • 2. Yuxi – Mohan railway (Yuxi – Mohan train)
  • 3. Boten – Vientiane railway (Mohan – Boten – Vientiane train)
