Best Way to Travel between Hong Kong & Xian
You can travel from Hong Kong to Xian (in Shaanxi Province) or Xian to Hong Kong by train or flight. There are no direct high speed trains running between Hong Kong and Xian, and you have to make a transfer at Guangzhou or Shenzhen. If you go by flights, there are about 2-4 flights daily, taking about 3 hours.
How far is Hong Kong from Xian: The distance is about 1800 kilometers.

- 2. Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Xi’an by high speed train (recommended, easy to transfer)

1. Hong Kong – Guangzhou – Xian by High Speed Train
Since there are no direct high speed trains linking Hong Kong with Xian, you will have to make a transfer at Guangzhou South Railway Station. Allow 25 – 40 minutes for making the connection.
From Hong Kong to Xian: Take one of the frequent high speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Guangzhou South Station first, taking 50-60 minutes, then connect to a G class high speed train from Guangzhou South to Xian North Station, taking 7.5 – 9 hours.
From Xian to Hong Kong: There are 8 daily G class high speed trains from Xian North to Guangzhou South, just catch one of them. Then transfer to a connecting high speed train from Guangzhou South to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station.

2. Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Xian by High Speed Train
In addition to Guangzhou, Shenzhen is also a good transfer point. More importantly, Shenzhen is more close to Hong Kong with frequent high speed rail service. It will be easier to make a train transfer in Shenzhen.
From Hong Kong to Xian via Shenzhen: Take one of the frequent high speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen North in just 15-20 minutes first, then get connected to a high speed train to Xian North, taking about 9.5 – 10 hours.
From Xian to Hong Kong via Shenzhen: Take a high speed train from Xian North to Shenzhen North in 9.5-10 hours, then change to a connecting high speed train from Shenzhen North to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station in just 15 – 20 minutes.

- Getting there: by Hong Kong MTR on Kowloon MTR stop or Austin MTR stop
Xian North Railway Station
- Station name: Xian North Station (Xianbei, 西安北站)
- Location: Weiyang District, Xian (Google Map)
- Getting there: at Bei Kezhan (North Railway Station) on metro line 2 & line 4 (under construction)
How to Buy Tickets
China train tickets go on sale 30 days in adavance if buying online or 28 days in advance if buying at train stations. But if you use an online ticket agent, you can place an order with them anytime. They will buy tickets for you once tickets are released.
Buy at Train Station
At Hong Kong West Kowloon: There are 23 ticket counters in West Kowloon Station for buying tickets for journey starting from or ending at Hong Kong (eg: Hong Kong to Shenzhen or Guangzhou; Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Hong Kong). If you travel beyongd Hong Kong (eg: Guangzhou to Xian or Shenzhen to Xian), you will have to go to the 5 designated ticket counters, at which you can buy tickets with a service fee. The ticket counters accept Hong Kong dollars or Chinese RMB. The ticket kiosks don’t accept your passport. See (How to buy Hong Kong high speed train tickets).
At Xian North: Just show up there and buy tickets with your passport. Don’t expect them to speak much English.
