How to Travel between Hong Kong and Chaozhou & Shantou

Both Chaozhou and Shantou are two cities located in east of Guangdong Province, and they are served by Chaoshan Railway Station (Chaoshan means Chaozhou & Shantou), which has bullet train connections to or from Shenzhen North Station, Guangzhou South Station, and Fuzhou South Station.

But it has no trains to or from Hong Kong yet since West Kowloon Station will not be open until Septermber of 2018. You will have to make a transfer at Shenzhen.

Option 1: Hong Kong – Chaozhou or Shantou (Chaoshan Station) by High Speed Train

Direct high speed train service linking Hong Kong SAR and Chaozhou in Guangdong Province will be launched in September of 2018 when Hong Kong’s bullet train station West Kowloon Station enters servce. By then, it will only take 2hrs 15mins to travel between Hong Kong and Shantou.

Currently, you have to make a transfer at Shenzhen North Station (Hong Kong – Shenzhen North – Chaoshan Station).

Hong Kong – Chaozhou & Shantou distance by train: 390 kilometers.

Option 2: Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Shantou/Chaozhou by High Speed Train

It is easy to travel from Hong Kong to Shantou/Chaozhou with a transfer at Shenzhen since there are metro service linking Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and high speed trains linking Shenzhen and Chaoshan Station (for Shantou and Chaozhou, Jieyang City).

From Hong Kong to Shantou/Chaozhou: Take Hong Kong’s East Rail Line MTR service to Lok Ma Chau station first, then walk across the border control and get into Futian Checkpoint station on Shenzhen side to catch metro line 4 to Shenzhen North Station, from where there are over 70 high speed trains daily running to Chaoshan Railway Station.

From Shantou/Chaozhou to Hong Kong: Take one of the frequent bullet trains from Chaoshan Station to Shenzhen North Station, then take metro line 4 to Futian Checkpoint and walk across border into Lok Ma Chau station to catch MTR service to central Hong Kong.

All the trains to Chaoshan station depart from Shenzhen North Station. The Chaoshan Railway Station is a high speed train station that serves Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang.
