Hong Kong – Shantou & Chaozhou by High Speed Train: The Best Way
Chaoshan Railway Station (Chaoshan means Chaozhou and Shantou) is the high speed train station that serves Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang in eastern Guangdong Province, which has high speed trains to or from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, Shenzhen North Station, Dongguan Raiwlay Station, Guangzhou South Station, Xiamen North and Fuzhou South, etc. If you want to travel between Hong Kong and Shantou & Chaozhou by bullet train, you can use this Chaoshan Railway Station, which has 8-9 G type high speed trains to or from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. From Chaoshan Railway Station, you can get to Shantou or Chaozhou by local public bus.
In addition to Chaoshan Railway Station, Shantou Railway Station, which is ideally located in Shantou’s city center also runs high speed trains to or from Shenzhen North, Guangzhou South even Chaoshan Railway Station. Starting from April of 2023, Shantou Railway Station also has introduced services to or from HK West Kowloon. Once daly, taking just 3 hours.

1: Hong Kong – Chaoshan – Shantou, City Center to Center
By train
You can travel from Hong Kong to Shantou, or Shantou to Hong Kong all the way by high speed train, city center to center with a transfer at Chaoshan Railway Station (HK West Kowloon – Chaoshan – Shantou).
From HK to Shantou via Chaoshan: Take one of the 8 daily high speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Chaoshan Railway Station first, taking about 2h45, then connected to a high speed train (14 daily trains) to the centrally-located Shantou Railway Station in just 25 minutes.
From Shantou to HK via Chaoshan: Take a high speed train from the central Shantou Railway Station to Chaoshan Railway Station first, 11 daily & just 25 minutes, then catch a connecting high speed train from Chaoshan Railway Station to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, 9 daily & 2h45m.

Chaoshan Railway Station to Shantou City: In addition to the train, you can also take a local bus 181 from Chaoshan Railway Station to get to Shantou City, taking about 50 minutes and costing from CNY10.

After arriving at Chaoshan Railway Station, you can connect to a high speed train to Shantou Railway Station, which take you to the city center in Shantou.

2: Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Shantou, City Center to Center Center
The option 2 is another way to travel from Hong Kong to Shantou, city center to city center with a transfer at Shenzhen North. But it has less train connections. Here Jack explains how to do it:
From Hong Kong to Shantou via Shenzhen: Take one of the frequent high speed trains from Hong Kong to Shenzhen North in 15 minutes first, then connect to a direct high speed train from Shenzhen North to Shantou Railway Station, 7 trains daily. You arrive at the city center in Shantou.
From Shantou to Hong Kong via Shenzhen: There are very few direct high speed trains from Shantou Railway Station to Shenzhen North and the timing is not good, so Chaoshan Railway Station is your best bet if you travel from Shantou to Hong Kong. Your route can be this: Shantou – Chaoshan – Hong Kong.

Option 3: Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Chaoshan – Shantou or Chaozhou, More Trains
The option 3 provides you with more train options. Since there are only 8-9 direct high speed trains linking Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and Chaoshan Railway Station, you can find more trains by having a transfer at Shenzhen North (HK West Kowloon – Shenzhen North – Chaoshan – Shantou or Chaozhou). Shenzhen North has 83 high speed trains daily to or from Chaoshan Railway Station, and 80 trains to or from HK West Kowloon. See Hong Kong to Shenzhen North train page.
Option 4: Hong Kong – Chaoshan – Chaozhou
Chaozhou Railway Station is a train station for normal trains (slow trains including Z, T, K trains). If you want to take a high speed train to or from Chaozhou, Chaoshan Railway Station is the station to go. There are public buses linking central Chaozhou City andChaoshan Railway Station.

How to Buy Tickets
You can buy tickets yourself at any stations in Shantou or HK West Kowloon with your passport. But if you don’t speak Chinese, you may use a trusted online ticket agent.

When to buy tickets
Both China & Hong Kong train tickets go on sale online 30 days in advance or go on sale at train station 28 days in advance.
Where to buy tickets
You can buy tickets with your passports at train station in HK West Kowloon Station or any train stations in Chaozhou, Shantou,etc. Or you can buy tickets online with a trusted online ticket agent, or Hong Kong MTR official site or www.12306.cn (the official Chinese train ticket booking platform, which is only in Chinese).
Buy tickets at train stations
In Hong Kong: You can buy tickets with passports at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station,where there are 23 ticket counters selling Cross Boundary Tickets (ie: trains starting or ending at Hong Kong, eg: HK – Chaoshan train, Chaoshan to HK train) and 5 designated counters selling Mainland Domestic Tickets (eg: Shenzhen to Chaoshan train, Chaoshan to Shenzhen train). The 5 desinated counters will charge you additional service fees. There are also ticket kiosks there but they don’t accept foreigner passports.

Important notes: If you buy tikets on Hong Kong MTR official site, you are only able to collect tickets in HK West Kowloon Station and it is imposible to pick up them in mainland China. So, if you start journey from West Kowloon Station, you should collect all tickets in West Kowloon Station. But if you start your journey from mainland China, don’t use HK MTR site to book tickets but use a mainland China’s site as you cannot pick up tickets booked at HK MTR site in mainland China’s train stations.
