How to travel between Hong Kong & Zhangjiajie
It was a littile bit complicated to travel from Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie in the past, as it requred you to make a few transfers by train or bus, but thanks to the high speed rail (Opening on 23 September of 2018), now it becomes easier for foreign travellers to travel from Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie via Changsha, or vice verse. The high speed trains link Hong Kong and Changsha, using West Kowloon Railway Station in HK and Changsha South Station.
In this page, I will explain best ways to travel between Hong Kong and Zhangjiajie: by high speed train + bus or by overnight t rain + bus. You will get some insider tips on the fastest way, or the economical way to travel between. Just see them below.
How far is Zhangjiajie from Hong Kong? The distance is about 1140 kilometers.
- Option 1: Hong Kong – Changsha – Zhangjiajie: by high speed train + bus
- Option 2: Hong Kong – Guangzhou – Changsha – Zhangjiajie: by high speed train + bus
- Option 3: Hong Kong – Gunagzhou – Zhangjiajie: by high speed train + overnight train
The best way also the fastest way to travel from Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie is by direct high speed train + bus via Changsha. Starting on September of 2018 when the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station starts operation, there are direct high speed trains linking Hong Kong and Changsha using West Kowloon Railway Station in HK and South Railway Station in Changsha, and between Zhangjiajie Bus Station and Lituo Bus Station (黎托汽车站) (next to Changsha South Station), there are buses available.
From Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie: Take a high speed train from West Kowloon Railway Station in Hong Kong to Changsha South Railway Station (see Hong Kong to Changsha high speed train) first, then walk to the Lituo Bus Station nearby, from where there are around 6 daily long-distance buses running to Zhangjiajie Bus Station (next to Zhangjiajie Train Station, see Changsha to Zhangjiajie by train or bus), and the bus fare is CNY135 per person.
From Zhangjiajie to Hong Kong: Take a bus from Zhangjiajie Bus Station to Lituo Bus Station next to Changsha South Railway Station first, then walk to Changsha South Station to catch a high speed train to West Kowloon Railway Station in HK.
As the direct high speed trains between Hong Kong and Changsha are limited, you may consider making a transfer at Guangzhou South if all direct trains sell out or don’t suit your time (Hong Kong West Kowloon – Guangzhou South – Changsha South) . After arriving at Changsha South, just walk to Lituo Bus Station next to it from where it runs 6 daily buses to Zhangjiajie bus station.
This option helps you save money and allows you enough time to explore Zhangjiajie as the overnight train (K9036) between Guangzhou and Zhangjiajie saves you a hotel bill for a night and departs at night & arrives in next morning.
From Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie: Take one of the numerous high speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Gungzhou South Station (See Hong Kong to Guangzhou high speed train page) first, then transfer from Guangzhou South Station to Guangzhou Railway Station (by metro line 2, 40-50 minutes), from where there are 4 daily overnight trains to Zhangjiajie. K9036 is the best option, which departs at 20:04 and arrives at Zhangjiajie Railway Station in next morning, allowing you enough time to explore Zhangjiajie.
