Currently, there are no high speed trains linking Beijing and Zhangjiakou as the Beijing – Zhangjiakou Intercity Railway is still under construction. You can now only travel by slow trains between Beijing Railway Station, Beijing West and Zhangjiakou South Station.

1: Beijing North – Zhangjiakou South by High Speed Train

Currently, there are no high speed trains linking Beijing with Zhangjiakou as the Beijing – Zhangjiakou Intercity Railway (high speed train service) is still under construction, which is scheduled to open for running in 4th quarter of 2019, shortening the travel time from 3 hours to just 50 minutes. The new high speed rail with a top speed of 350km/h will link Beijing North, Qinghe, Shahe, Changping, Badaling Great Wall (Badaling Changcheng) Stations in Beijing, and Donghuayuanbei, Huailai, Xiahuayuanbei, Xuanhuabei and Zhangjiakou South in Zhangjiakou City. In addition to the main line, the intercity rail also has branch lines: Yanqing Branch and Chongli Branch (The branch line for 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games).

Main line: Beijing North – Qinghe – Shahe – Changping – Badaling Great Wall – Donghuanyuan North – Huailai – Xiahuayuan North – Xuanhuan North – Zhangjiakou.

Yanqing branch: Badaling Great Wall Station – Yanqing

Chongli Branch: Xiahuayuan North – Zhaochuan South – Taizicheng

2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games

Zhangjiakou, a city in Hebei Province is also a city that will host a certain activities of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, including the Nordic skiing, snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Zhangjiakou South Station and Beijing – Zhangjiakou Intercity Rail were built for this games to link all venues all within one hour of each other.

As Beijing – Zhangjiakou Intercity Railway runs through the worldwide famous historical site Badaling Great Wall, a high speed train station named Badaling Great Wall Station (Badalingg Changcheng Station)are being built near the Great Wall section, which enables travelers to see Badaling Great Wall by high speed train from Beijing or Zhangjiakou, Hohhot even Datong, etc.

2. Beijing Station – Zhangjiakou South by K Train

Since the Beijing – Zhangjiakou High Speed Rail will not be operational until the end of 2019, you will now have to travel by slow train, namely those K, Z, Y type ordinary trains. About 13 ordinary trains are leaving daily from Beijing Railway Station, arriving at Zhangjiakou South Railway Station in just 3-5 hours. From Zhangjiakou, there are 15 trains departing for Beijing Railway Station and 7 for Beijing West Train Station. Train travel time and ticket price are shown below.

3: Beijing West – Zhangjiakou South by K Train

You can also start your rail journey to Zhangjiakou from Beijing West Station, which has about 8 daily slow trains to Zhangjiakou South Station, taking about 3-3.5 hours. When coming back, you can take one out of 7 daily trains from Zhangjiakou South to Beijing West.

Which Train Station

The Beijing North Railway Station (BeijingBei) is for the future Beijing – Zhangjiakou Intercity High Speed Train, which is just close to the subway station Xizhimen Station on line 2, line 4 and line 13. While the current slow trains running between Beijing and Zhangjiakou are using Beijing West, Beijing Main Station and Zhangjiakou South Station (ZhangjiakouNan).

How to Buy Tickets

You can buy tickets in person at any train station in Beijing, including the Beijing Railway Station, Beijing North Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station. Just take all passengers’ passports to buy tickets at station.
