Fenghuang Ancient Town – Shanghai Transportation
Best Way to Travel between Shanghai & Fenghuang
Thanks to the high speed rail, it has become possible to visit Fenghuang Ancient Town by high speed trains from many cities like Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and so on. But this no includes Shanghai yet. No direct bullet train services are linking Shanghai with Fenghuang, and it requires you to make a transfer at Changsha South (Shanghai – Changsha – Fenghuang) or Huaihua South (Shanghai – Huaihua – Fenghuang). Besides, you can also fly from Shanghai to Changsha first, then take a metro (maglev train) from Changsha airport to Changsha South Railway Station, from where there are bullet trains to Fenghuang Railway Station (Fenghuanggucheng Station).

Huaihua South Station (Huaihuanan) serves as an important rail hub for those who are travelling to Fenghuang from Shanghai, or Hangzhou, Nanchang, Guiyang, Kunming, even Chengdu and Chongqing, as it has frequent trains to or from these cities mentioned above as well as trains to Fenghuang Gucheng Railway Station.
From Fenghuang: Take a train from Fenghuang to Huaihua South first, which takes around 30 minutes. Then make a transfer by taking a high speed train to Shanghai Hongqiao Station, taking 7.5 hours.
From Shanghai: Just take a train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Huaihua South first, then connected train to Fenghuang Gucheng Railway Station in just 30 minutes. Just allow 30 minutes for changing your train.

Changsha is the capital city of Hunan Province, with Changsha South Railway Station serving as the most important transportaton hub, which can be accessible via high speed trains from most provicial capital cities. It is very convenient to travel between Shanghai and Changsha by train, or Changsha and Fenghuang by train.
From Fenghuang: All the trains to Changsha are departing from Fenghuang Gucheng Railway Station and arriving at Changsha South Railway Station, taking just 2h10 or so. Then, chang to a connecting train to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, taking about 5-6 hours. Remember to allow at least 45 minutes connection time for changing your trains.
From Shanghai: There are frequent trains running from Shanghai to Changsha, using Shanghai Hongqiao Station and Changsha South Statin, taking 5.5 – 6.5 hours. After reaching at Changsha South, just change to another speed train to Fenghuang Gucheng Station, which takes about 2.5 hours.
3. By Train + Plane
The fastest way to travel from Fenghuang to Shanghai or vice verse would be taking a train between Fenghuang and Changsha, then a flight between Changsha and Shanghai.
From Fenghuang to Shanghai: Take a train from Fenghuang to Changsha first, which arrives at Changsha South Railway Station, from where you can ride the maglev service from the south train station to Changsha Huanghua International Airport in 30 minutes. Then you just fly from Changsha to Shanghai.
