According to the official 12306 China Railway, the Kunming – Vientiane international cross-border train will start operation on April 13, 2023. The train will run once daily from Kunming South Railway Station (Kunmingnan) and arrive at Vientiane Railway Station, calling at Pu’er Railway Station, Xishuangbanna Railway Station, Mohan Railway Station in China, and Boten Station, Luang Prabang Station, Vang Vieng Station in Laos. The whole journey takes around 10h30m.

D887 train runs from Kunming South (Kunmingnan) at 08:08 (Beijing time) and arrives Vientiane Railway Station at 18:38 (Beijing time), taking 10h30m.

D888 train departs from Vientiane Railway Station at 09:08 (Beijing time), and reaches at Kunming South Station (Kunmingnan) at 19:38, taking 10h30m.

Mohan – Luang Prabang by Train

As the Kunming – Vientiane Railway opened in December of 2021, it will be possible to travel between cities in Yunnan and Laos by international trains overland. The international trains will link Mohan, the small town at border near Boten, and Luang Prabang, using Mohan Railway Station and Luang Prabang Railway Station.

But as of March of 2023, the international trains are not possible yet due to the China – Laos border is not open yet. More information about the timetables, fares and ticekts will be added when trains are ready for operation.

From Mohan to Luang Prabang : the international trains to Luang Prabang are departing from Mohan Railway Station, and arriving at Luang Prabang Railway Station.

From Luang Prabang to Kunming: More info will be added when the train schedule is released.

How to Buy Train Tickets

Since the international trains between Yunnan and Laos are not available yet, the international train tickets cannnot be booked through the methods below until China and Laos opens its border and launchs international services.

1. Buy online with official China Railway 12306

12306 China Railway is China’s only official online train ticketing platform, where you can check the real-time train schedule, booking rail tickets and managing your rail journey within every part of mainland China and Hong Kong. It has launched English version website since November of 2020, allowing foreign travelers to book tickets directly with their passports and credit cards.

2. Buy tickets with online ticket agents

www.chinahighlights.com and www.trip.com are the two recommended and trusted online ticket agents. Lots of foreign travelers had used their websites to check live train schedule and book ticekt with them. China Highlights even provides ticket delivery service.

3. Buy tickets at train station

You can also buy train tickets in person at any train station in China with your passports and cash. Don’t expect the train station staffs to speak any English. In Mohan, you can buy train tickets at ticket office in
Mohan Railway Station.

4. Buy tickets on a phone APP

LCR Ticket APP is the official phone application for booking Laos rail tickets. It is owned by Laos-China Railway Co. Ltd. (LCR) and offer services in 3 languages: the Chinese, English and Laotian. With the app, passengers can check real-time schedule, purchase tickets, and make online payment and ticket refund, etc. It has both Android and iOS versions. Check: LCR Ticket Android or LCR Ticket iOS.

Kunming – Vientiane Railway

The Kunming – Vientiane Railway is consisted of three parts of railways:

  • 1. Kunming – Yuxi railway (Kunming – Yuxi train, 0.5-1 hrs)
  • 2. Yuxi – Mohan railway (Yuxi – Mohan train)
  • 3. Boten – Vientiane railway (Mohan – Boten – Vientiane train)
