The Shangri-La to Kunming train is the way most travelers end their Yunnan trip. It’s a direct C-class train that takes 4.5 to 6 hours, with five departures a day. Second class starts at ¥244. The line opened in November 2023 — before that you were looking at a 10-hour bus or a flight. This is better.

All trains depart from Shangri-La Railway Station (香格里拉站). On this route, train numbers change mid-journey (e.g., C644 becomes C641) — this is normal, you stay in the same seat. Always verify on 12306 or Trip.com before booking — schedules shift seasonally.

Kunming → Shangri-La (the way up): About 5 daily trains in the opposite direction. Earliest departs Kunming at 7:50 AM, latest at 4:39 PM. Fastest is C86 at 4h 45m. Same fare range. The schedule table above is the reverse of these — same trains, opposite direction.
What the Train Is Like
All Shangri-La–Kunming trains use the CR200J Fuxing EMU — the green-liveried “Green Giant” (垃圾桶) purpose-built for plateau routes. Coming down from 3,276 m, you’ll watch the altitude drop on the overhead display as the landscape shifts from Tibetan peaks to Yunnan’s terraced farmland.
- 2nd class (2+3 seating): Decent legroom, fold-down tray, USB charging. ¥244–260 — perfectly fine for 5 hours.
- 1st class (2+2 seating): Wider seats, more recline, quieter car. Worth the ~¥150 upgrade if you want to nap or work.
- Business class (2+1): Lie-flat-ish seats, snack box. Only available on C88 — check when booking.
- Hot water dispenser at the end of each car — bring instant noodles or a tea flask
- Western toilet in at least one car per train; most cars are squat toilets
- Overhead displays show real-time speed and altitude
The Lijiang–Shangri-La Railway
The 139.7 km Lijiang–Shangri-La Railway (丽香铁路) opened on November 26, 2023 after nearly a decade of construction. It’s a single-track electrified line with a design speed of 140 km/h, climbing from Lijiang’s 2,400 m to Shangri-La’s 3,276 m — making Shangri-La Station the highest passenger station in Yunnan.
From Shangri-La, your train follows this new line back to Lijiang, then joins the upgraded Kunming–Dali–Lijiang corridor for the rest of the way. The first hour (Shangri-La → Lijiang) is the scenic highlight — you’re descending from the Tibetan Plateau with snow-capped peaks in the rearview. Keep your camera out for the stretches around Xiaozhongdian and Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Buying Tickets: Practical Tips
- Booking window: 15 days ahead on 12306.cn. Summer (July–August) and Golden Week trains can sell out within 2–3 days — especially C644 (morning) and C88 (fastest).
- Station name: Search “Xianggelila” to “Kunming” — the 12306 system doesn’t recognize “Shangri-La.”
- Foreign travelers: Trip.com accepts international cards. Same real-time inventory as 12306, English interface, no Chinese ID needed.
- Paper tickets are gone: Just scan your passport at the gate.
- Window seat: On this direction (southbound), sit on the right side for the best mountain and gorge views in the first hour after departure.
Shangri-La: Things to Do Before You Board
Most travelers spend 2–3 days in Shangri-La before catching the train back. If you’re still planning your time here, these are the essentials — all easily doable before an afternoon or evening departure:

- Altitude check: Shangri-La sits at ~3,300 m. If you’ve spent a couple of days here you’ll already be acclimatized. If you just arrived from Lijiang, give yourself at least 24 hours before anything strenuous.
- Getting to the station: Taxi or Didi from Dukezong takes ~10 minutes, about ¥15–20. Bus #1 runs from the ancient town to the station for ¥2. The station is compact — you’ll be through security in 5 minutes.
- Food for the train: Grab yak meat jerky (牦牛肉干) and butter tea from shops near the ancient town — way better than train cart snacks for the 5-hour ride.
- Last-minute souvenirs: Dukezong’s main street has reasonable prices on Tibetan prayer flags, thangka prints, and yak-bone carvings if you forgot to shop earlier.
