Shangri-La Railway Station (香格里拉站, Xianggelila Station) is the highest passenger railway station in Yunnan Province — perched at 3,276 meters above sea level. It’s the terminus of the Lijiang–Shangri-La Railway, which finally brought rail access to the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture when it opened on November 26, 2023.

The Lijiang–Shangri-La Railway

The Lijiang–Shangri-La Railway is a national electrified railway and part of the longer-term Yunnan–Tibet Railway (滇藏铁路). It runs 139.7 kilometers from Lijiang to Shangri-La at a design speed of 140 km/h. After nearly a decade of construction starting in October 2014, the line officially opened on November 26, 2023 — ending Diqing Prefecture’s status as the last prefecture in Yunnan without rail access.

What this means for travelers: Kunming to Shangri-La now takes about 4.5 hours by train — versus over 10 hours by road before the railway. Lijiang to Shangri-La is just over an hour.

Getting to Dukezong Ancient Town & the City

The station sits on Shika Road (石卡路), about 2 km from Dukezong Ancient Town. You have a few options:

  • Taxi / Ride-hailing (fastest): ~5–8 minutes, about ¥10. Didi works in Shangri-La — have the app ready before you arrive. Official taxi stand and ride-hailing pickup zone are outside the exit.
  • Bus #1 (cheapest): Just ¥1, ~15–20 minutes to the ancient town. Runs frequently during the day.
  • Bus #12A (rail shuttle): Dedicated high-speed rail connector to the city center, ~¥5, ~15 minutes.

⚠️ Heads-up: Dukezong Ancient Town has cobblestone streets that will destroy your suitcase wheels. Take a taxi straight to your guesthouse entrance, or book accommodation near the East Gate or North Gate where vehicles can pull up.

Songzanlin Monastery (松赞林寺)

The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, often called the “Little Potala Palace.” Built in the 17th century, it’s about 8 km from the station.

  • Getting there: Bus #3 from the city center, or ~20-minute taxi from the station (~¥25–30).
  • Entry: ¥90 (online), ¥55 at the manual ticket window. Open 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
  • Photo tip: Best light on the golden roofs is mid-afternoon. Photography prohibited inside the main prayer halls.

Pudacuo National Park (普达措国家公园)

China’s first national park built to IUCN standards, about 25 km from the station. Alpine lakes, old-growth forests, and meadows at 3,500–3,700 m elevation.

  • Getting there: Tourist shuttle from the station’s distribution center (¥15), or charter a car (~¥200 round trip). Public buses also depart from Shangri-La Bus Station at 8:00, 8:30, 9:30, and 10:00 AM — return buses at 2:00–4:30 PM.
  • Entry: ¥138 (includes park shuttle bus). Open 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
  • Plan 4–5 hours. Bring your own snacks — food inside the park is pricey.
