Jack’s Travel Experience & Tips for Visiting Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou

March 30, 2025

On March 30, 2025, Jack took the high-speed train C16 from Chengdu East Railway Station to Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou Station. The train departed at 08:36 and arrived at 11:11, covering the journey in 2 hours and 35 minutes. After arrival, I transferred to a scenic shuttle bus to visit Huanglong National Park for 4-5 hours. At 17:40, I took the last shuttle bus from Huanglong to the Meilun Hotel near Jiuzhaigou Valley, where I stayed overnight before spending the next day exploring Jiuzhaigou. Below are my firsthand experiences and tips for fellow travelers:

1. Departing from Chengdu

  • Train Details: I booked the C16 train departing at 08:36 from Chengdu East Railway Station. I left my hotel near Chunxi Road at around 07:00 and walked to the subway station to catch metro Line 2.
  • Subway Route: Line 2 connects Chunxi Road Station directly to Chengdu East Railway Station (6 stops, approximately 20 minutes).
  • On the Train: The C16 departed on time. I sat in a window seat in the second-class cabin, enjoying scenic views along the way.

2. Arrival at Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou Station & Transfer to Huanglong National Park

  • Arrival: The train arrived at Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou Station at 11:11. After exiting the station, take the escalator up to the station square to find the Scenic Through Bus parking area (look for blue or white buses operated by Jiuzhaigou Travel Group). Avoid green local buses (which serve Songpan County or Songzhou Ancient Town) unless necessary.
  • Shuttle to Huanglong: I bought a shuttle ticket (28 RMB) on-site. The bus left at 11:35 and arrived at Huanglong Seercuo International Hotel‘s parking lot by 12:15 (a 40-minute ride). The driver reminded us that the last shuttle to Jiuzhaigou departs at 17:40 (subject to change), so travelers should plan to return to another the parking lot by 17:00, which is next to Huanglong Tourist Center (not the Cable Service Center).
  • Timing Tip: If your trains arrive Huanglongjiuzhai Station in the morning, visit Huanglong first (allowing 3-4 hours for exploration) before heading to Jiuzhaigou. Note: Huanglong stops admitting visitors after 16:00.

3. Taking the Cable Car & Exploring Huanglong

  • Cable Car & Supplies: After arriving, walk to the Huanglong Cableway Service Center to buy park tickets, cable car/shuttle passes, and supplies (e.g., oxygen canisters – strongly recommended due to the 3,300m altitude). I experienced altitude sickness here and later vomited twice on the bus back to Jiuzhaigou.
  • Cable Car Route:
    • From the service center, follow signs to the ropeway entrance (a 500-meter wooden walkway).
    • Take the cable car (operating hours: uphill 09:00-17:00; downhill 09:00-16:30; advance tickets required) to the upper station (a 3-minute ride).
    • Transfer to a sightseeing bus (20 RMB/person, limited to 5,000 tickets daily) for a 6-minute ride to the hiking trail.
  • Hiking Highlights:
    • Walk 750 meters to Huanglongsi Temple and the iconic Colorful Pool (Wucai Pool). Move slowly to conserve energy and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
    • Descend on foot past attractions like Zhengyan Pool and Welcome Pool. However, during my March visit, snow covered most ponds and waterfalls. Summer (June-August) or autumn (September-October) is ideal for vibrant views and flowing water.
  • Return: I hiked down quickly due to icy trails and reached the parking lot by 17:20. The shuttle to Jiuzhaigou took 2 to 2.5 hours.
