Getting to Hengdian World Studios from the Station

Hengdian World Studios is about 9 km from the station. You have three options — the light rail is the fastest and cheapest.

1. Jinhua Rail Transit — Light Rail (Recommended)

The Jinhua Rail Transit Jinyidong Line (金华轨道交通金义东线) is the game-changer for visiting Hengdian. It’s China’s longest single municipal rail line at 107 km, connecting Jinhua city, Yiwu, Dongyang, and Hengdian in one continuous “L”-shaped route. The line has 31 stations total and opened in phases between August 2022 and April 2023 — well before the high-speed railway, which arrived in September 2024.

For Hengdian visitors, here’s what matters: the light rail station is inside Hengdian Railway Station (B2 level). See the full route map below. You transfer without exiting the building — follow the signs for 轨道交通 after you pass through the HSR ticket gates. Fare: ¥2–16 depending on distance. Pay with Alipay (Transport → QR code), WeChat Pay, or ticket machines.

Yidong Section (义东段): The Line You’ll Actually Use

The Yidong section runs north–south from Yiwu Railway Station through Dongyang city center and Hengdian, terminating at Ming & Qing Palaces Station. This is the line that connects the high-speed train to the film studios.

How to Use It: Three Common Scenarios

Scenario A: Hengdian HSR Station → Hengdian World Studios (the local hop)

  • Board at Hengdian Railway Station (横店高铁站), southbound direction toward Ming & Qing Palaces
  • 1 stop, ~3–5 minutes
  • Fare: ¥2
  • Exit at Ming & Qing Palaces Station (明清宫站) — you step out directly at the entrance to the largest scenic area

Scenario B: Arriving via Yiwu — Train + Light Rail Combo

  • Take a high-speed train to Yiwu Railway Station (义乌站) — the Hangzhou–Yiwu segment has far more trains than direct Hangzhou–Hengdian
  • At Yiwu Railway Station, follow signs to the light rail (轨道交通) — the station is integrated into the HSR complex
  • Take the Yidong line southbound, ~40 minutes to Ming & Qing Palaces Station
  • Fare: ~¥8–10 from Yiwu Railway Station to Ming & Qing Palaces
  • This route is useful when direct trains to Hengdian are sold out or your schedule doesn’t line up

Scenario C: Arriving via Jinhua — Both Lines

  • Take a train to Jinhua Railway Station (金华站) or Jinhua South Station (金华南站) — both on the light rail network
  • Board the Jinyi section (金义段) eastbound to Qintang Station (秦塘站)
  • At Qintang, transfer to the Yidong section southbound (same platform, no stairs)
  • Continue to Ming & Qing Palaces Station
  • Total light rail journey: ~90 minutes, ~¥16 (max fare)

2. Public Bus

There are 12 bus routes connecting Hengdian Railway Station to the studios and surrounding areas. The most useful one:

  • Bus 8 (旅游专线): A dedicated tourist shuttle from the station to Hengdian World Studios. Runs ~6:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Other routes: Bus 17, K201, K301, K316 also serve the station–studios corridor.
  • Fare: ¥2 city-wide (Dongyang buses adopted flat ¥2 pricing from January 2025).
  • Journey time: ~25–35 minutes, depending on traffic.

3. Taxi / Ride-Hailing

  • Journey: ~15–20 minutes to the Ming & Qing Palaces entrance.
  • Cost: ~¥20–35 via Didi or taxi.
  • Didi works well in Hengdian — have the app set up before you arrive.
  • Designated pick-up area outside the station exit. Follow the signs for 网约车 (ride-hailing) or 出租车 (taxi).

Hengdian World Studios: The Main Scenic Areas

Hengdian World Studios (横店影视城) is the world’s largest film studio complex — 13 filming bases spread across 30+ square kilometers. It’s where most Chinese period dramas are shot. If you’ve seen The Untamed, Joy of Life, Empresses in the Palace, or Nirvana in Fire, you’ve seen Hengdian.

Combo tickets save serious money: A 2-day pass (any 4 scenic areas) costs ~¥468, vs. ¥700+ if you buy individual tickets. The 3-day pass (Dream Valley + any 4 areas) at ~¥510 is the best value for a proper visit. Book on Trip.com or the official Hengdian WeChat mini-program. Student tickets are half price with valid ID.

Ming & Qing Palaces (明清宫苑) — The Crown Jewel

This is the closest scenic area to the light rail station (you literally walk out of Ming & Qing Palaces Station into it). A full 1:1 replica of Beijing’s Forbidden City, built at a cost of ¥800 million across 1,500 mu (~100 hectares). Filming location for Empresses in the Palace, Story of Yanxi Palace, and Curse of the Golden Flower.

  • Must-see shows: Forbidden Ceremony (紫禁大典, 9:00 & 14:00) — a 40-min stage production covering 580 years of Forbidden City history. Eight Banners Horse Battle (八旗马战, 10:00 & 13:00) — live equestrian stunts.
  • Photo spots: Hall of Supreme Harmony, red walls of Yanxi Palace, Nine-Dragon Wall, Imperial Garden. Hanfu rental available inside (~¥80–100/set) or cheaper outside (~¥50).
  • Plan 3–4 hours. Rent an electric scooter (¥30/hr) if you don’t want to walk — the complex is huge.
  • Open: 8:30–16:30 (winter may close at 16:00).

Qin Palace (秦王宫) — The Most Cinematic

The Qin Palace replicates the Xianyang Palace of the Qin Dynasty. Famous for the 99-step staircase leading to the Hall of Unity (四海归一殿) — the same steps you’ve seen in Hero (英雄) and Joy of Life (庆余年). The black-and-red color palette, oppressive scale, and underground palace ride make this the most visually striking area.

  • Must-do: Dragon Emperor’s Arrival (龙帝惊临) — a 4D underground palace ride. Long queues but worth it. Empire’s Rivers and Mountains (帝国江山) — panoramic flying theater.
  • Best photos: Early morning on the 99 Steps (before 9 AM), long corridors with telephoto lens, the Hall of Unity throne room.
  • Plan 2–3 hours. Qin/Han dynasty-style costume rental fits the aesthetic better than Ming/Qing hanfu here.
  • Open: 8:00–17:00 (summer), 8:30–16:00 (winter).
  • Getting there: ~5-min taxi/Didi from Ming & Qing Palaces. Not directly on the light rail — you’ll need a short ride.

Guangzhou Street · Hong Kong Street (广州街·香港街) — Best at Night

The first scenic area ever built in Hengdian (1996, for the film The Opium War). It recreates 1840s Canton and colonial Hong Kong. The Hong Kong section, with its neon signs, tramlines, and Victoria Harbour replica, comes alive after dark.

  • Opening hours: 13:00–21:00 (last entry ~20:00). This is a nighttime attraction — enter after 16:00 to see both day and night views.
  • Must-see shows: Step Into the Movie (走进电影, ~19:00) — immersive street performance. Battle of the Raging Sea (怒海争风, ~16:30 & 18:50) — water stunt show at Victoria Harbour.
  • Cheongsam/qipao rental widely available — perfect for Republic-era photos.
  • Plan 2–3 hours, evening slot.

Dream Valley (梦幻谷) — Night Shows & Fireworks

The nighttime entertainment zone — part theme park, part water park (seasonal), part live performance venue. The two headline shows are Dream Taiji (梦幻太极) and The Mountain Is an Eagle (暴雨山洪), both large-scale productions with special effects, water, and fire. On weekends and holidays, there’s usually a fireworks finale.

  • Enter by 16:00 to ride the attractions before the shows start. Shows typically begin around 19:00–20:00 — check the schedule on the day.
  • Water park: Open in summer (June–September). Bring swimwear.
  • Combo strategy: The 3-day pass that bundles Dream Valley with 4 other scenic areas offers the best value.

Practical Tips

  • Book tickets online before you go: Individual gate tickets are expensive (¥175–195 each). Combo passes on Trip.com save 30–50%. Scan your passport or ID card for entry — no paper ticket needed.
  • Download the Hengdian app or follow “横店影视城” on WeChat: Show schedules change daily, especially in off-peak season. The Chinese-only mini-program lists real-time performance times, which most English-language guides don’t show. Use WeChat’s built-in translation if you need it.
  • Hanfu rental: Rent outside the park (~¥50 with makeup) rather than inside (~¥80–100). Shops cluster around the entrances to Ming & Qing Palaces and Qin Palace. If you want Republic-era costumes (cheongsam/qipao), rent near Guangzhou Street.
  • Getting around between parks: Hengdian is spread out — individual parks are NOT walkable from each other. Use Didi (cheap, ~¥5–15 per trip) or the free shuttle buses (included with combo tickets, but limited frequency outside peak season). Electric scooters are available to rent inside larger parks (~¥30/hr).
  • Best seasons: April–June and September–November. Summer (July–August) is hot and crowded. Winter (December–February) is quieter and cheaper, but some outdoor shows may be cancelled in bad weather.
  • Light rail last train: The Jinhua Rail Transit back to Hengdian Railway Station runs until ~21:00–21:30. If you’re at Dream Valley for the night show, plan to take a Didi back to the station (~¥30) rather than the light rail.
  • Hengdian is not just a day trip: The studios are massive. A 2-day itinerary is the minimum to cover the highlights without rushing. If you’re doing a day trip from Hangzhou or Yiwu, pick 2 areas max (e.g., Ming & Qing Palaces + Qin Palace).
