The journey takes just over an hour, and with ~10 trains running daily in each direction, it’s now the default way to travel between the two cities.

Onboard: What the Train Is Like
All trains on this route are **CR200J Fuxing EMUs** — the green-liveried “Green Giant” (垃圾桶, as Chinese rail fans affectionately call it). These are power-concentrated EMUs running up to 160 km/h, purpose-built for plateau routes. Inside, they’re modern intercity trains:
- 2nd class: 2+3 seating, decent legroom — perfectly fine for 1–1.5 hours
- 1st class: 2+2 seating, wider seats, more recline
- All seats have fold-down trays, USB charging ports, and overhead racks
- Hot water dispenser at the end of each car (bring instant noodles or tea)

Arriving at Shangri-La Station
Shangri-La Station sits in Shini Village (尼史村), about **6–7 km from Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城)**. The station is compact and well-organized — you’ll be out and on your way in 5 minutes.
- Bus #1: ¥2, ~15 minutes to the north gate of Dukezong Ancient Town. Runs frequently alongside train arrivals.
- Taxi: ~¥20, 15–20 minutes. Official taxi stand right outside the exit. Didi also works in Shangri-La.
- Walk: Technically possible (~40 minutes) but not recommended at 3,300 m with luggage.
⚠️ Cobblestone warning: Dukezong’s streets are beautiful but will destroy your suitcase wheels. Have your taxi drop you at the nearest vehicle-accessible gate to your guesthouse — usually the North Gate or East Gate. Confirm with your hotel in advance.
Altitude: What Foreign Tourists Need to Know
Lijiang sits at ~2,400 m. Shangri-La is at ~3,300 m. That’s a 900 m climb in just over an hour. Most people feel it — don’t ignore this section.
Buying Tickets
Tickets open **15 days in advance** on 12306.cn. In peak seasons (Chinese New Year, Golden Week in October, summer July–August), popular morning departures sell out within days. On 12306, search “Lijiang” to “Xianggelila” — the system doesn’t recognize “Shangri-La.”
