35 Replies to “Get to Fenghuang Ancient Town by Fast Train or Flight + Bus”

  1. i read in many source that there is only 2 buses a day which go to Fenghuang from Zhangjiaje at 8:30 and 14:30.
so your information is the new updating? which one is correct?
please let me know. thank you!

    • Hi, there
I just ask such the same question in the Chinese travel community, and get to know that there are 6 daily bus from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang. So my information is new updating. But be noted that “Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang bus” here means the buses departing from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (Zhangjiajie Zhongxin Zhan, 张家界中心站) to Fenghuang.
But I also get to know that there are only 2 bus daily from Wulingyuan bus station to Fenghuang, which departs at 08:30 and 14:30. So you’re right, but you just get confused with the Zhangjiajie Bus Station and the Wulingyuan Bus Station.
So, after finishing your journey, you can just catch a bus from Wulingyuan to Fenghuang.
      Enjoy your journey.

  2. i read that “There are 6 regular buses every day during April to November.”
so what’s about i travel to Fenghuang around January and February? from Zhangjiajie

  3. Hello, it’s me again. I want to ask that when going into Fenghuang, do traveler have to pay for the entrance ticket? Some people tell me that Traveler don’t need to pay for ticket (248 yuan) if they don’t visit famous places in Fenghuang, just at hotel, walking around on street..

    • No need to pay for the entrance fee (148 yuan) any more. Starting from April 10, 2016, the entrance fee policy for going into Fenghuang Ancient Town has been cancelled. Travelers can enter the ancient town and walk around for free now, except those tourist sites that charge fees.

  4. Hello, do you know is there direct bus to Fenghuang from Hongjiang ancient town (also in Hunan)
And the bus schedule to get to Hongjiang from Huaihua South railway station?

Thank you so much and have a nice day

    • Hi, I searched it online and found that the best way is to take a bus from Huaihua South Bus Station to Hongjiang Ancient Town, 1.5 hrs ride. You can transfer to the bus station from South Railway Station by public bus no.12. But I didn’t see any bus information to Fenghuang from Hongjiang. Maybe you need to get back to Huaihua first, then catch a bus to Fenghuang.

    • Don’t use the Jishou West Bus Station, use Jishou North Bus Station, which is only 200 meters away on the left side of Jishou Railway Station. You can walk to get there. The bus from Jishou North bus station to Fenghuang departs every 30 minutes, journey time is 60 – 80 minutes.

  5. And how many bus a day from Fenghuang to Wulingyuan? What if i travel on the Chinese New Year Holiday, all the bus schedule is still the same as normal day right?

    So sorry for too many questions ^____^;

      • Do the buses depart on 8:30 and 14:30 everyday?
Thanks you so much for helps. My plan is going to Fenghuang first and then leave to Wulingyuan. But inside Wulingyuan national park have so many places have to visit but i still don’t know where to go, i only have 1 night and 1 day in Wulingyuan. Cause the next day i’ll spend whole day in Tianmen mountain. Can you introduce some the must visit places in Wulingyuan Zhangjiajie National Park?

        • Hi, just sorry. I just don’t have any good itinerary plan for you. As for the bus departure time, I got different answers. Some said it departs from Fenghuang at 8:50 and 14:00, while some others said it departs at 8:30 – 14:30. Anyway, just get to the bus station early for catching your bus. Good luck.

  6. Hi you
How can I go to Fenghuang from Nanning buy bus? I searched it online but I can’t find any information about that. I have a plan to travel to Fenghuang and Zhangjiajie on Chinese New Year Holiday. Pls help me. Thanks alot

    • Hi, there
Fenghuang is quite far from Nanning. The most popular way to travel from Nanning to Fenghuang is using a train + bus with a transfer at Jishou. You route would be these:
Take an overnight train (3 trains daily, K748, 2012, and T282) from Nanning Railway Station to Jishou Railway Station (吉首火车站) first, then walk to Jishou North Bus Station (close to Jishou Railway Station) to catch a bus to Fenghuang. The bus journey time is about 1 hour and the cost is CNY25 per person.
By the way, buy train tickets as early as possible as when traveling during the Chinese New Year because the tickets off get sold out quickly.

    • As for the bus schedule from Nanning to Fenghuang, I searched it online and see 1 bus departing from Nanning Xixiangtang Bus Station (南宁西乡塘汽车站)at 19:00 to Fenghuang, and the cost is about 200 yuan.

Be noted: All the information is just for your reference. I am not quite sure whethere it still has the bus service from Nanning Xixiangtang to Fenghuang.
Anyway, taking a train to Jishou from Nanning first, then a bus to Fenghuang is ofthen the way to go.

  7. I trawled through a number of sources that provide information on how to buy bus tickets for long-distance travelling in Zhangjiajie. I get the impression that one has to buy tickets on the day of travel. Accordingly, if one wants to catch the early bus one has to get to the bus station a couple of hours earlier to secure them. What if the tickets I want for the first morning bus are sold out?
Can I buy tickets from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang and then leaving Fenghuang for Changsha a day prior to departure? If not, how early should I get up and get to the station and join the queue for a ticket. Please help. Many thanks

    • I don’t know whether it requires you buy tickets only on the day of travel, but you can have a try to buy it 1-2 days in advance. If not permitted, just turn up at the bus station around 40 minutes – 1 hour in advance to secure your tickets. If you don’t manage to buy the ticket for the first morning bus, you’ll have to buy ticket for the next bus.
Your bus tickets are only valid for boarding the bus leaving at the appointed date as written on the ticket.

    • Thanks Jack for your response, really appreciated.
I will certainly try to buy a ticket a day or so in advance, if it doesn’t work, I guess I will just have go to the bus station early to queue for it. Thanks again.

  8. Hello,
I would like to know if bus schedule are reliable as I need to reach Changsha railway station from Fenghuang and by bus will be easier than mixing bus+train trough Huaihua .We will fly from Changsha to Diqing in the afterrnoon. Thanks in advance

    • Hi,
I have post the same question on Chinese travel community and get the information below. Just for reference only:
The Chinese travelers said that there are buses from Fenghuang Bus Station (north station) to Changzhutan Bus Station in Changsha, departing at 08:30, 10:00,12:30, 14:00, and Changzhutan Bus Station is next to (in front of) Changsha Railway Station, which means you can reach Changsha Railway Station.
You can look for more information about these in case of miss your bus.

  9. Hi.
    You wrote:
Due to refurbishment at Liuzhou Railway Station, the train service from Liuzhou to Jishou K748, 2012, K1474 have been moved to Liujiang Railway Station 柳江站), then catch one of the 3 daily overnight sleeper trains from Liuzhou to Jishou Railway Station (The train K748, 2012, K1474) …

The train from Guilin goes directly to Liujiang Railway Station? How do I get between the old Liuzhou railway station and the new one in Liujiang ?
    Thanks.

    • Hi, Yes the regular sleeper trains from Liuzhou (K748, 2012, K1474 etc) are now using Liujiang Railway Station (柳江站), which is a small station that reopens for service again and is about 13 kilometers from the old Liuzhou Railway Station (柳州站).
Your high speed trains from Guilin will arrive at Liuzhou Railway Station (not Liujiang), then you need to change to Liujiang Railway Station by public bus (bus 99 or 10) or a taxi.
But taking a bus is a little bit complicated, which will take you 45 minutes with a 15-minute walk involved. So, I would suggest you to take a taxi, which may take you 25 minutes. Just for reference.

    • Hi, you can travel from Fenghuang to Guilin on these routes:
      1. Fenghuang – Jishou – Liuzhou – Guilin:
First, take a bus from Fenghuang to Jishou, where to catch a overnight train (train 2011, k1473, T281) from Jishou to Liuzhou (arriving at Liujiang Station, T281 is best to choose, which runs every other day, arriving at 07:01), then transfer by taxi from Liujiang Station to Liuzhou Station, then take a high speed train from Liuzhou Station to Guilin Station.

      2. Fenghuang – Huaihua – Guilin by slow train
Take a bus from Fenghuang to Huaihua, and stay for a night in Huaihua to catch the once daily morning train (K653) from Huaihua Railway Station (the old station) to Guilin North Station, departing 06:30 & arriving at 17:52.

      3. Fenghuang – Huaihua – Guiyang – Guilin by high speed train
Take a bus from Fenghuang to Huaihua, where to take a high speed train from Huaihua South Station to Guiyang North Station, then a connecting bullet train from Guiyang North to Guilin. This route is faster than making a connection at Changsha.

      4. Fenghuang – Huaihua – Changsha – Guilin by high speed train
Take a bus from Fenghuang to Huaihua, where to take a bullet train from Huaihua South to Changsha South, then a connecting bullet train from Changsha South to Guilin.

5: Fenghuang – Guilin by direct bus
I don’t know if the direct bus from Fenghuang to Guilin still running. Maybe you can ask the bus station staff when you are in Fenghuang.

If you have any questions, I can work out more options for you.

  10. Hello, just another question here 🙂
I was wondering from which bus station in fenghuang the bus to huaihua south rail station leaves from, what times and how long the journey takes.
Thank you very much in advance, the information is very helpful and very much appreciated.

  11. Hi Jack,
thanks for all the info. I had an idea of going from Kunming to Fenghuang and then via the ancient cities of Qianyang to Guilin. I have 2 questions about it:
    – I will follow your advise, although I dont know if it makes a difference in time if I would get out in Tongren and take the the bus from there or go to Huaihua and take the bus there.
    – I wanted to see the ancient city of Qianyang on the way to Guilin. Is there an train station nearby to continue my journey towards Guilin via Sanjiang.
    thanks in advance

    • Hi,
#1: If going from Kunming, the best way is the travel by high speed train from Kunming South to Huaihua first, then a bus from Huaihua to Fenghuang.
#2: From what i searched, Qianyang Ancient City is located within Hongjiang of Huaihua City. If so, you will have to get back to Huahua Railway Station (not the Huaihua South Station) in Huaihua, then a K train to Sanjiangxian Station. Then transfer to Sanjiang South Station, from where to take a high speed train to Guilin.

  12. Hi Jack is it possible to prebook bus tickets from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang or do they go on sale on the day also from Fenghaung to Guilin same Thanks kev
